I love me, I love me not, I love me!

Now that January is well and truly gone, we have succumb to a world of pink and red fluffy hearts, stuffed bears and overpriced chocolates. These gifts are meant to tell our partners how much we care, but I’m not quite sure how a cuddly toy (no matter how cute) can make up for me being a pain the rest of the year. Valentine’s Day seems to be one of those days that polarises people, but for me, I like the excuse to get an M&S meal deal and have a nice night in. Most of us don’t struggle caring for others, but here we’ve got a day to remind us to show them our love.

But, why isn’t there a day where we focus on appreciating ourselves? The majority of women aren’t happy with themselves, be it their body, their job or the way their minds. Maybe we should spend some time focusing on ourselves, learn to love ourselves. Prioritising yourself can be a challenge at the best of times and in a world of never-ending demands, you need to try and celebrate you and reward yourself.

So this month, I challenge you to learn to love yourself. Take a look in the mirror and tell yourself how great you are, even when you might not believe it. Admire what we have been through and what we have achieved in the face of adversity, admire the lives that we have built for ourselves and the things we still hope to achieve. Plan an alternative Valentine’s Day, where you focus on yourself. It doesn’t have to be an extravagant all singing-all dancing spa day (but it can be!), but it does have to be all about you! Set yourself a date so that you don’t make other plans, then the day before have a power hour where you write down all the little thing that you need to do and get as many of them done as possible to clear your mind. Have a good night sleep and treat yourself to something you have longing to do, be that sitting in a café reading a book or going on a day trip somewhere new. Eat good food, take your time and just enjoy some moments to yourself to reward yourself for all that you accomplish on a daily basis.
